Experience the Schlossberg and recharge your batteries in Freiburg’s natural surroundings

  • Design and implementation of the new Schlossberg Trail
  • Concept for children’s food banks featuring ‘scratch-off flyers’
  • Special exhibits such as a 3D model of a castle and a marble run

On the Schlossberg, the history of the fortress and the natural beauty of the Black Forest come together in a unique way. Just a few steps separate city life from an enchanting landscape. Whether you’re looking for relaxation or action – in Freiburg, we can find balance in the many parks and lakes, on walks and cycle rides, or simply by letting our gaze wander over the vast expanse of the Black Forest peaks.

Rediscovering the history and nature of the Schlossberg

To make the Schlossberg even more attractive for residents and tourists alike, we have designed three discovery trails featuring fascinating information boards. On the one hand, they explore the Schlossberg’s unique history and its eventful past as a fortress; on the other, they highlight the diverse flora and fauna.

In addition to the 25 information boards in total, features such as a marble run for children, several ‘time spirals’ and ‘sky loungers’ invite visitors to explore and linger.

Charming children’s information boards featuring ‘scratch-and-reveal fun’ and the Schlossberg mascot ‘Spensti’

Of course, the children haven’t been forgotten either. Eight children’s information boards provide fun facts about the history, flora and fauna of the Schlossberg. At the same time, the little ones can go on a treasure hunt. Each of the panels hides a scratch-off area. Simply grab the children’s flyer available at the Tourist Information Centre, scratch the areas with a pencil and look forward to finding a little treasure.

THE THREE ROUTES

  • Explorer’s Tour (14.1 km): Explore the Schlossberg on a leisurely circular walk to the tourist destination of St. Ottilien and enjoy the view from the Schlossberg Tower along the way.

  • Mez’sche Adventure Trail (2.4 km): This exciting circular walk takes you past the Schlossberg vineyards and the Kanonenplatz up to the Ludwigshöhe, the former site of Burghaldenschloss.

  • Fortress Tour (4.4 km): Following the route of the former fortress, this tour takes you on a journey through the history of the Schlossberg: from the site of the Lower Castle complex, past the Schlossberg Tower, to the Upper Castle.
